The Drive Power Five: Spring Valley tops area poll

The Spring Valley Timberwolves were a unanimous choice as the Tri-State area’s top high school football in Week 1 of The Drive Power Five.

The Timberwolves received all first-place votes in voting by Kindred Communications football announcers for The Drive with Paul Swann radio show heard weekdays 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on WRVC-AM (ESPN 94.1 & AM 930).

Spring Valley earned the honor with it’s 29-28 season-opening win over rival Huntington High last Friday night.

The Highlanders dropped from Number 1 in the preseason poll, falling to third.

Spring Valley hosts Portsmouth Friday night at 7, while Huntington plays its home opener against South Charleston.

The 2-0 Raceland Rams come in at Number 2 in this week’s poll after a 53-14 trouncing of Russell in a Greenup County battle. The Rams host the Rowan County Vikings on Friday night.

Undefeated Ironton is fourth in the poll after a 29-26 win over Jackson last Friday. The Fighting Tigers open Ohio Valley Conference play at Fairland this week.

After knocking off Cabell Midland 28-21 to open the season, the George Washington Patriots are 5th in this week’s poll. GW is home for a second straight week on Friday, hosting the Ashland Tomcats, who are 1-1 after beating rival Boyd County last week by a 22-8 score.

Also receiving votes this week were the Hurricane Redskins and Fairland Dragons.
